Since the earliest days of
astronomy, since the time of Galileo, astronomers have
shared a single goal — to see more, see farther, see deeper. The launch of the
Hubble Space Telescope in 1990 on board the space shuttle USS Discovery
sped humanity to one of its greatest advances in that journey.
Because Hubble orbits the Earth, much like other man-made
satellites, it is positioned above the Earth's atmosphere and provides a
view of the universe that typically far surpasses that of
ground-based telescopes.
